Roger Shen, piano

Roger Shen, 14, is an 8th grader at Northbrook Junior High. When he was a young boy, his parents often took him to concerts, which sparked his interest to learn more about classical music. He began his piano studies at age seven and is currently a student of Sueanne Metz. At age nine, he gave his first public performance at the Parisian Salon Concert Series, held at the Northbrook Public Library. In the past three years, Roger has participated in several local, national, and international competitions. He has also been awarded prizes from the Society of American Musicians, Walgreens National Concerto Competition, Sejong Music Competition, Chopin Youth Piano Competition, and NSMTA Summer Music Scholarship. This summer he won first place at the Aloha International Piano Concerto Competition in Hawaii; the winner, will perform Rachmaninoff's Piano

Concerto No. 2 (1st movement) with the Honolulu Youth Orchestra on April 17, 2013.

Roger has made frequent public appearances, including an interview and performance on Chicago radio station WFMT's Introductions program. He performed twice at the Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, as well as at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Hawaii Convention Center, the Parisian Salon Concert Series at the Northbrook Public Library, and at Grand Piano Haus. He has been invited to perform for professional organizations such as the International Conference on Clinical Excellence in Kansas City, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.

In the summers of 2011 and 2012, as a scholarship recipient, he attended the International Institute of Young Musicians (IIYM) Summer Academy where he was selected to perform in honors recitals, student recitals, and donors concets.
